Silicon dioxide or silica is a common additive in paints and coatings. It is known for its thixotropic properties, meaning that it can change viscosity due to mechanical stress. When added in small amounts to paints, it can eliminate the settling of liquid droplets, making the coating smooth and consistent.

 

Silica as Sellting Agent for Coating

In unsaturated polyester coatings, adding 0.5-2% concentration of silica can prevent droplets and wrinkles even when applied vertically at a rate of 500g/m2. Adding silica to pigments and dyes can enhance their adsorption and improve their dispersion. It also prevents pigment settling and provides better stability to the coating.

 

As a filler in emulsion coatings, silica increases heat stability and improves the non-settling properties of the paint. There are specialized silica-based matting agents designed to meet the requirements of coatings and inks. When used in nitrocellulose and other lacquers, these matting agents improve the non-settling properties of the paint and enhance its transparency, abrasion resistance, and suspension properties.

 

In printing inks, the addition of 0.5% silica can improve the print quality by eliminating the effect of undispersed ink. It also enhances the wash resistance of the printed materials and increases their color brilliance.
